Palace Green Pavilion

Built in the 1830’s as a gentlemen’s reading room and attached bowling green, within a gated and railed “square”, it has been an ideal base for the 5th Berwick Scout group for the last 80 years. It has, however, suffered continual gentle decline, to a point now where urgent action is needed to restore the fabric of the building and the green, and to extend and reinvigorate their use.

The scouts recognise that the building and the green have a potential far greater than that of catering for their needs alone: As the only 19th Century gated square in Berwick, and as one of a tiny number of green spaces within the walls of Berwick, Palace Green is an oasis in the dense urban weave, and forms the physical focus of the residential areas of the lower town.

Through the efforts of the Better Berwick Fund, which is a subsidiary fund of the Preservation Trust, and through the efforts, dedication, desire, and participation of many local residents, and of other groups such as the Berwick Family Centre, Palace Green now has the potential to become an active heart for the community, in addition to being a visual focus.
